Cobalt is a mineral used in lithium-ion batteries of laptops, mobile devices and electric automobiles. It is estimated that by 2026 demand for cobalt will multiply eightfold. However, doubts have recently emerged regarding the respect of human rights in the production of the mineral in some of the main countries of origin, like the Democratic Republic of Congo. For this reason, as explained by Rachel Wolfson on Forbes, Ford Motor Company launched a pilot project with Huayou Cobalt, IBM, LG Chem and RCS Global providing the application of the Blockchain technology to trace and validate the ethical mining of the mineral.
